Session 10 Recap

What's up all you folks out there library land?

This week has been fun! I really enjoyed learning about the different technologies. I especially liked the screencasting. That was pretty neat!

I don't really have much to add to the discussion of this weeks topics. I think that this is the first time in a while that I actually really enjoyed the lesson. I learned so much!

I am going to talk to my Director about possibly using the screencast technology to post a how-to video. Our patrons are always asking about accessing their accounts using the website. I think that if they had something to use as a reference then it would help them. Plus its just plain cool! :D

Another thing that was really cool and I enjoyed this week was our Wimba Classroom session. I have never used anything like it before. I enjoyed the experience and the conversation. This class is my favorite in regards to instructors and class! I hope you feel the same!

In regards to my Web 2.0 projects, nothing has changed since last week. I've been busy and just haven't gotten around to them this week. I will be finished soon though! I can't wait to share them!

Alrighty then folks, I should be leaving ya'all and hittin the sack! Church is early in the morning!

Stay sassy and tres cool you loco library people!

Question for You

I have a question for you.

But before we get to the question I need to tell you a story.

I work at a school part time when I am not at my beloved library. I have developed a rapport with the school's librarian. She is quite amazing actually and has played a role in my decision to indulge my passion for all things library related. She offered great advice and I am very thankful for and to her.

Well, since I have this rapport, when I have a free moment I try to visit her in the library. One day I was in the library when a group of kids were there. A volunteer was helping the students check their books out. One little boy brought this big book to the desk and the volunteer looked at the big book then the little boy and said this, "Oh this book is too hard for you, let's go find something smaller that you can read." I was floored and furious all at the same time. I couldn't believe that she said that! I mean who was she to judge?

That brings me to my question: Would you ever tell a child or anyone else that they couldn't read something because it was too big or hard for them? Or would you encourage them to tackle it?

I personally would never utter those words. I think that we learn best by challenging ourselves (there have been studies that have backed this up.). If that wasn't the case then why would teachers/professors assign hard text?

I also think to a child those words can be very damaging. Think about it, you are in a state of development and very impressionable, you decide to read something that looks a bit difficult, but someone tells you can't read it because its too hard. How would you feel? Good? Sad?

I think that child would feel bad and think that it was no use in trying to do difficult things because someone will be there telling him he can't do it. But that's my opinion.

I'm interested in what you think. Please le3ave me a comment.

Stay great you wonderful library people!

Web 2.0 Post

Hiya All!

Just a quick update on my Web 2.0 projects. I am feeling pretty good about them!

I actually really like this assignment!

The projects I chose are:

-Second Life
-Picture Sharing
-Library Thing

I am currently in the process of working on all three. The one I am most excited about is the Second Life. I am a huge fan of the Sims and it reminds me of the game!

My projects will be ready soon! I can't wait to share them with you!

Chapter 2 Sources

Its finally here!

What you may ask?

The end of the six week source monitoring!!

I have to say that I personally am a bit pleased with the fact that the source monitoring is over. Why? Because I kept forgetting to check them until I did my blog posts. I had them bookmarked in Delicious, in my RSS feeder and on both of the computers I use for school- but STILL forgot about them. (I did remember eventually.)Now, I have one less thing to remember in my already chaotic brain.

But enough chit chat: Let's get started with my analysis of my sources shall we? I will try to make the experience as painless as possible.

Freepint: FreePint wasn't half bad. I didn't have the problem of it not being updated regularly. Almost everytime I checked, the site had been updated. The content that FreePint offered was informational and I found it helpful. Example: FreePint wrote in their newsletter for February 17th 2011 about providing accurate and simple information to patrons. The newsletter also listed a link to a very interesting and beneficial article. I have provided the link for you at the bottom of this page. One of the subjects I am personally interested in is information literacy. FreePint gave me some interesting points on this topic. I daresay, that I may consult FreePint in the future- even though it is no longer required.

Educause: I hated this site. With a passion. No...really! I chose this source because of the catchy title: 7 Things You Should Know About. I thought, "Wow! This is going to provdie me with some interesting information! Yay!" Not yay. This source was very rarely updated- which made the point of updating on its lack of updates ridiculous. I seriously thought about dropping this source from my monitoring schedule. But alas, I decided I had already started so why stop? I decided to see it through to completion. The rare updates that occurred, didn't interest me or help me out that much. I will not ever use this source again unless asked to, nor will I recommend that anyone waste their time with it.

Finally, the piece de resistance- Disruptive Library Technology Jester: I loved this source! The author had a way of writing that captured my attention. I get bored easily (as I'm sure ya'all have noticed) but this blog really entertained me. The author provided interesting and important information plus wrote in an easy going manner. The posts were filled with other sources to gain information from. I was impressed- and that isn't something that happens often. Every post I found information and can't really pick a favorite. I do have a most interesting pick: The post from February 2, 2011. I even wrote about it. You should check it out. For easy viewing I included the link below. I will definitely be using this source in the future and highly recommend it to others in the future.

Donald Miller

Ok...So I follow Donald Miller on my RSS feed.

If you aren't familiar with him, he is an AMAZING author! I love the way he writes, its different and very honest. Plus he's quite humorous!

I HIGHLY SUGGEST reading him. I may be a bit biased but- eh whatever! :D

So, to the point of this post...
He is running a promo or something of the sort to win a copy of his book..I am totally participating in it in the hopes that I win a copy!!

All I have to do is embed his video in my blog. So...Watch this great video!

It talks about telling a story, more specifically your life story...You just have to watch to get the full gist of it. It is really a great video and motivating. Even if you don't ever read his novels (which you really really should), you should watch it- just for its motivational message.

Watch out for the part where he states, "Conflict actually brings meaning into our story." His statement is so true. I challenge you to write it down so that you remember it when things get tough. I know I will! :D

What story are you telling? from Rhetorik Creative on Vimeo.

If you are interested in buying his book here are the links to it on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Check him out and let me know what ya think! If you have any questions about him or his work don't hesitate to ask! Ya'all know I'm willing to share anything about literature (especially those in my top 5 :D)

As always- keep it sassy you crazy library people!

Session 8 Reflection..

I discovered that I was familiar with the material that was introduced this week.

Even though I have heard of all the topics, a refresher is always nice. I especially like how the book broke down the different technologies.

Oh! I forgot... I heard VoIP mentioned briefly but didn't know what it was. I found the concept interesting. I probably won't ever use it, but it is nice to know that it is out there.

I wasn't particularly interested in the internet mashups. Frankly, I don't really care. But that's just me, it doesn't mean it isn't helpful to know about.

Alright, I know its short and not really humorous... I will try to remedy that with my next post! :D

TOODLES you crazy library peoples!!

Isn't Information Delicious?

As you can tell by my title this post is all about my Social Bookmarking experience.

We can all agree that it is important for libraries to have a website to provide easy accessibility to our patrons. Understandably, it is harder for smaller libraries to develop these websites because of tight budgets and what not.

Well, according to Disruptive Jester, the OCLC's Innovation Lab is starting a project ot that would offer smaller libraries an inexpensive website. The prices range from $5 per month to $40 per month depending upon the modules and etc.

Disruptive Jester provided a link to the sample site: http://experimental.worldcat.org/lib/n/us.tn.loremville-public-library

Here is the link to the Disruptive Jester Site where I found the article: http://dltj.org/article/thursday-threads-2011w2/

Now moving on to Deliciousness...

I started using Delicious and was kind of interested in it, but didn't really develop a passion for it? At first it was cool and everything, but I found signing in evertyime I wanted to access my bookmarks really quite annoying. I didn't really use it a lot for my research. I bookmarked my information sites, but I used my RSS feeder more for the information than I did Delicious.

I am currently using Delicious for Academic purposes, more specifically this class, but that's all I'm using it for. I probably won't use it much in my personal life. I may end up using it in my professional life.

Overall I found this project to be interesting. It really opened my eyes to the resources and tools that are available to consolidate the amount of information we access via Web. I liked learning about the different topics that are becoming discussions in the library world. I know that I will definitely benefit from all the knowledge I have acquired and all the knowledge I will acquire.

(Normally I would close with my normal tag line, but I think the seriousness of this assignment warrants otherwise. Just imagine that it is here! :D)
